With the signing of former all pro linebacker Anthony Barr the Dallas Cowboys have continued to solidify their defense as one of the best units in the NFL. Led by defensive architect Dan Quinn the defense terrorized opposing offenses, ending the season number one in turnovers with 34 total. While the Cowboys have already amassed an impressive array of talent on the defensive side of the ball there is still plenty reason to add Roquan Smith to the mix.
The former first round pick has earned consecutive all pro selections these past two seasons and has proven himself to be one of the best at his position. During the 2021 season Smith amassed a career high 168 total tackles and was also able to score his first career touchdown.
Smith is to good of player to pass on if available and it appears acquiring him COULD be relatively cheap for the Cowboys. Due to his contract being set to expire at the end of the season it is feasible that he could be available for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Even if the Cowboys do not resign him after the season his presence on this iteration of the Cowboys defense would put them over the top and give the Cowboys arguable the best line backing core in football. With Dan Quinn’s track record of maximizing the talent of his defensive players it would be a substantial signing for the Cowboys defense that would pay dividends.
Strengthening a strength is never a bad thing and while the offense struggles to find itself a defense that includes Roquan Smith should be able to carry the load.
Update: Smith’s 2022 season has been nothing short of astonishing up to this point. Through the first 6 games of the season, Smith has tallied 66 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception. While some have criticized Smith’s effort on certain plays and have contributed his contract negotiations to these perceived lapses in effort, Smith is still having an all pro caliber season. With the Cowboys’ run defense rearing it’s head as a glaring weakness for an other wise stout defensive unit, Smith’s services would greatly improve Dallas’ defense as a whole and would finally mend the last kink in the defensive units armor.
